The Yerevan Biennial

The Yerevan Biennial’s activity is primarily directed to local communities and is aimed to engage international audiences physically and digitally. We would like to think of ourselves as an initiative that Armenians are proud of and people of the diaspora and international audiences are curious about. The latest Biennial, Yerevan Digital Biennial titled The Time Complex was implemented during October 2020 and January 2021. All activities and content were developed online on www.yerevanbiennial.org.

YBAF is now looking to implement the Biennial in Yerevan in 2024 as a celebration of peace and an invitation to explore the city and the wider region, utilizing contemporary art as a gateway to the rich culture, heritage, and warm sociability of Armenia.

Objectives

We aim to become the most respected contemporary art event in the Country, and one of the most influential in the broader region. As an organization, we thrive to be recognized for high standards of professionalism and a rigorous working ethic. We want to reach out to any sector of the society, but we are particularly committed to youth. Because of the opportunities and scenarios created by the Biennial, we hope that more young persons in the future will undertake a career in the creative industries, becoming active members of the art community and participants in the cultural life of the country.

It is difficult to estimate/indicate at this stage (no other similar experiments have been attempted in the country, so there are no parameters of reference) how many people we shall reach and engage in/through the digital and physical space. We however aim at:

  • Recognition as a trustworthy and respected art organization by the local and international communities and securing their future affiliation.
  • Peer-to-peer and professional recognition (artists, writers and intellectuals, art institutions, academy and schools, art market and galleries, etc.)
  • Increase the turnaround of the organization within the first 3 editions by 30%.
  • Secure sponsorship’s and financial support from a diversity of sources to assure resilience.
  • Creating the need for cultural events that position Yerevan and Armenia within the global arena and perspective. Avoid cultural insularity and self-referential validation.
  • Project a positive image of the region and create a brand for the city as a new vibrant, exciting cultural destination with a great quality of life (safe, relatively inexpensive, fun, with personality, gastronomy and wine, etc.)

measured by

  • Increase in numbers of visitors from the region, country, internationals.
  • Increase in expenditure in cultural activities, typical products and local experiences.
  • Increase in public programs devoted to contemporary art.
  • Increase in scholastic trips to Yerevan or from within Yerevan with contemporary art as a motivation.
  • Increase on cultural offers throughout the city during and following the festival (impact).
  • Increased presence in the international press (specialized, life-style, generalist press, financial etc.)
  • Increased public and private investment in culture.
